Nature-Based Learning

New England Biolabs

New England Biolabs prioritizes environmental sustainability in all facility designs and is the caretaker of a remarkable natural environment. When expanding childcare options for the community, the client saw an opportunity to emphasize its core values through nature-based design. This facility meets net zero energy goals with minimal investment in onsite renewable energy while also integrating a visually quiet building that honors the physical environment by making evident natural processes and framing views of the adjacent meadows and wetlands.

A significant design driver was to educate next generations about the importance of protecting natural systems while meeting the needs of the community. The project focused on site selection, construction methods, and finish materials that support a nature-based learning curriculum, and energy systems that demonstrate environmentally conscious choices. Key strategies include using carbon-negative structural elements (a mix of stick-built and mass timber wood construction), as well as a coordinated energy system that optimizes daylighting, artificial lighting, heat pumps, and a thermally efficient exterior.

Learning Spaces with Room to Grow

Classrooms were designed for flexibility and personalization while connections from inside to outside are reinforced with wayfinding colors that connect interior corridors, classrooms and the outdoor spaces beyond.

A Natural Palette for Student Discovery

The interior finish palette was conceived as being both clear in connection to the natural setting and distinct enough to allow each space to be graphically unique, encouraging the students to identify the spaces on their own and giving each space a sense

Integrating Safety and Surroundings

Integration with the adjacent meadows, woodlands and wetlands needed to be balanced with strict safety criteria for outdoor play spaces in early childcare facilities. Clear boundaries that visually and conceptual blur together with the natural environment reinforce the overall concept of the project.
