Honoring History, Designed for the Future

Deerfield Academy

Part of ARC’s ongoing relationship with Deerfield Academy, the renovation and addition to this existing 1947 historic dining hall expands seating and options at this iconic, central building on the Deerfield campus.

The project includes major additions on the north and south sides and increases seating capacity in the main dining hall to 730 seats to fit all students and faculty. The kitchen and servery in both and student and staff/faculty dining areas were also upgraded and modernized, increasing faculty/staff seating to 150 seats and improving traffic flow in the building.

My number one concern about our dining hall renovation was acoustics and let me say, if anything, the space was quiet... It was a truly delightful experience, and conversation was had around the entire table.

While the main design goals for the project focused on program space and integration with the historic architecture, ARC worked closely with Deerfield Academy to find the most efficient opportunities for sustainable design, including all new energy efficient MEP systems and food service equipment, a state- of-the-art food composting system using “Grind-2-Energy” equipment, and a new 100 kW solar array on the south side of the site to provide a regenerative energy source while also addressing a campus grounds issue of previous challenges maintaining plantings on the steep slope.

Major site landscaping improvements improve the flow and accessibility across campus and to this new community gathering space, siting The Brick as a cornerstone of the Deerfield experience.

The main dining hall features large windows for views to the south and connections to an exterior seating terrace, with views overlooking the athletic playfields, to the river and mountains beyond. A row of plantings and trees provide shade for terrace seating and for the southern half of the interior dining room.
